A few months ago I completed my Masters in Communication for development at Malmö university. A fantastic program, taught by the best in the field and full of interesting and energetic participants, I can say. While I was studying, one of the most common questions that I was asked by people was, what I will become when I finish my studies. This question was always hard to give an answer to, mostly because of what C4D is. It is multi disciplinary and can be applied across a wide range of organisational set ups. In general, it refers to a theoretical and practical approach of promoting development that is attained through open communication of all stakeholders involved. It is a form of democratic approach to development that values the active participation of all stakeholders in the development process.
Having studied a BA in media studies and possessing work experience as a communication officer in a humanitarian aid organisation, my aim in studying a masters in communication for development was to complement my knowledge of communicating humanitarian development issues , with the right theoretical and practical approaches in the field. In humanitarian work, C4D is defined by UNICEF as involving understanding people, their beliefs and values, the social and cultural norms that shape their lives. C4D is described as involving engaging communities and listening to adults and children as they identify problems, propose solutions and act upon them. Communication for development is seen as a two-way process for sharing ideas and knowledge using a range of communication tools and approaches that empower individuals and communities to take actions to improve their lives, (UNICEF). In this section of my blog, I will share the various forms that C4D takes as well as discuss the past , present and future of humanitarian development work as well as themes related to C4D. © Santino Zhakata 2011
