One world under the skyMutare was the centre of the world for me. When I looked up, as a small boy, and saw the mountains that surrounded me, how they connected like a chain of beads around the city of Mutare, I fooled myself believing that beyond the monutaines lay nothing. It was as if they were the ends of my tiny world.. Mutare, my home city, like a football stadium, lay spread out on a plain, surrounded by interlocking mountain ranges. In the early hours of winter, a thick blanket of white cold air would descend from the mountains, enveloping the city below as if a giant had just spread out his bed linen over the city. As a boy, turning round in all directions, I would see mountains in the horizon. Like symbolic boundaries, my mind wondered little on what lay behind those mountains. As funny as it sounds now, I have a strong memory of telling myself that there was nothing behind the mountains, just plain, empty grass plains stretching far into the distant horizon. At times I dreamt of climbing up to the very top of them and look to see what was on the other side. As I grew older, I noticed that between these mountains lay networks of roads going outwards like veins and arteries from the heart. My horizons expanded. Beyond their new boundaries came more horizons, from cities, to provinces, countries, continents and universes. Not only geographically but also cognitively. I believe, sometimes, what lies right in front of you can be so much more enriching than that which shimmers in the distant horizon. Likewise, if one limits their vision to only what lies in front of their feet, they might miss the magnificence that comes with lifting their neck and gazing at the glorious horizon ahead. ConclusionHave you ever given a thought of the way you viewed the world as a child? Has your view then had an sort of impact on what you have become in your adult life? Any warm childhood memories that you warm up to just thinking about them. Feel free to share your thoughts as comments below.
