The biggest lesson I have learnt now is that parents leave-no matter how old the child is, is not a chance to do those little things one never got the chance to do while on the job. Lest I be misunderstood, I acknowledge the great parenting benefits of actively being there for my kids and bond with them. After weeks of looking for a perfect chance to start blogging about my experience being on parents leave, the truth dawned on me that on parent leave, there is hardly any time for doing anything that the kids are not directly involved in. When I try sitting down to write on a computer, the sweet ones crowd around me or pill on my pants asking to be lifted onto my lap. My little hopes of finally striking off a few stuff from my long To-do list are next to vanished now. I had hopes of being able to do some online tutorials on photography and video software or be able to update my website, for example. I have a load of photos and videos of my kids waiting to be edited and organized. Ain´t happening! Wisdom has visited me in my sleep recently and It dawned on me. If you can´t beat them, join them. My compromise is now to do everything I can do with them, take them everywhere I can and then take videos and photos of them so I can write with them about them instead. This explains this blog. Since becoming a parent to my small children, my journalisitic expertise have centered mostly on them. They are my photo and video subjects. Since beginning parents leave, these tiny people have captured my interest tremendoursly. I wonder and am amazed at their little minds and actions. Consequently, I think of blogging about my experience as a stay-at-home-dad, the challenging question, of course, is When? Instead of expecting a perfect day to sit and write an organized blog post, I have now decide to write spontaneously and just put it down with no big demand on myself otherwise I will never do it. I love the feel of that freedom. One of my new acquired skills as a parent at home with my kids, is to take advantage of every tiny gap and do the little that I can then. It takes me an hour, literally to empty the dishwasher, one item at a time with a considerable number of "emergency alert" gaps in between. It is not likely that a long enough stretch of time will ever be available. There is a saying that goes “ given enough time, a big sack of sugar can emptied using a teaspoon ”. With children at home, I have learned to load the coffee machine, go off to do something else, come back to start it, go off, come back to pour the coffee in a cup, go off again and finally take my first sip an hour later since I made it. I used to be touche about drinking coffee cold, mut now I am a new man, bring it on! I have been planning to blog for many weeks now and still not been able to find an ideal time to do it . I have decided to just start and I am so happy I did, and now I have to log off, till my next post, coming very soon:-) © Santino Zhakata 2011
